Golf instructor David Leadbetter shows Golf Digest how to take the club back in order to hit the perfect low punch shot with an iron.
There are gonna be times
when you’re gonna have to adopt a low punch shot.
Maybe you’ve hit it just off the fairway
and there are some overhanging limbs
and you need to advance the ball forward.
The most important thing is get the ball back into play.
So I’m going to show you a four-step plan
how to hit these punch shots,
and I’d like you to practice it just a little bit
so when you get out on the course,
and you’re faced with one of these shots,
it’s not that difficult.
So the first thing is, you want to make sure
you take a club with less loft,
maybe you want a club up by at least two clubs,
depending on what’s in front of you.
Obviously you have to make sure you can get over
if there’s any shrubbery, or grass, what have you,
in front of you.
If it’s pine needles, then that’s easy.
Right, so what you want to do,
you want to choke down on the club at least two inches.
Put the ball back two inches further than normal.
From here, you want to make sort of a three-quarter swing.
That’s the next step, a nice three-quarter swing.
Maybe half, half to three-quarters, no further than that,
and finally, you want to make sure
you have a nice, short follow-through.
That short follow-through will ensure
that your hands are leading the club
in coming into the ball.
You don’t want the club here leading the hands,
otherwise, it’s going to send the ball up in the air.
We’re doing everything we can
to keep the ball down, to de-loft the club.
Finally, make sure the motion is nice and smooth.
Don’t try to hit it too hard.
It’s a soft punch, if you will.
OK, so ball back, choke down on the club,
smooth three-quarter swing,
nice, short follow-through.
Just like that.
Practice that shot
and you won’t have any problems in the trees.
